About Winesap Studio

Welcome to Winesap Studio, thanks so much for dropping in! Our site is dedicated to celebrating the scenery, history, and culture of northwest Georgia through photography, original art, and essay. Our studio was launched in 2024 and we are based in Cartersville, Georgia.

Some background on the name of our Studio: Winesap is a heritage apple variety that was first cultivated in the U.S. in pre-colonial times; it is now considered a “southern” apple which grows well in north Georgia and thus serves as an appropriate symbol of the area. Also, some of my fondest memories involve travelling to various apple “houses” and orchards in the Fall with my family, and we always made sure to bring home some Winesap apples as those were our favorites.

For our purposes, we have defined northwest Georgia as the 14 counties you see on the map (below).  There are of course many other beautiful locales in the rest of the state, but we have found that there are endless interesting and photogenic sites just in the northwest corridor (for those who are willing and able to see the beauty that is right around us).

You’ll see on our site that our current product is a coffee-table sized book titled “High on the Ridge and Deep in the Valley,” which celebrates town and rural life as well as the flora and fauna of the region. Additional offerings of smaller books are in development.

We’d be happy to ship any item that you desire, but even if you don’t purchase anything you are always welcome to visit our site when you need a break from our modern, chaotic world and want a dose of rural and small-town serenity.

Thanks again for visiting us, we hope that you enjoy our work and return often!

About Randy

Randy retired in 2024 after a 38-year career in Human Resources, mostly in the engineering consulting world. Retirement allowed time for him to pursue his life-long interests in art, photography, geography, and history, and that pursuit led to the idea of creating photo books that focus on specific regions and include historical background and commentary.

The goal is to encourage all of us to notice the beauty and uniqueness of our surroundings, thus allowing us to better appreciate the places that we live in and travel to. Randy is pictured above with his daughters Rachel (l) and Katie (r). They share his interest in capturing unique photographs and contribute their talents to these projects.
